Chapter fourteen

Oh What a Night!

Itried all evening not to think about Soleil's offer. Before bed, I reviewed all the missing persons from the last year and found no one who resembled Jane Doe.

My mind went back to Lainie's theory inspired by supermarket tabloids. What if the reason we couldn't find her identity was because she’d never been given one in the first place? How had this young woman been off the radar her entire life? If that message was right, that she’d lived in an orphanage, wouldn’t there have been some record of who she was?

My sleep was turbulent, and I woke up from another nightmare long before sunrise. I’d been dreaming about being trapped in a windowless room I couldn’t get out of, at the bottom of a pit. Someone was coming down there after me.

I couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up, tiptoed past sleeping Ziggy, closing the door to the rose bedroom behind me, and found myself wandering in my robe and slippers past the front stairs to my suite-under-construction.

Impulsively, I stepped in and flicked on the ceiling light switch, then went into my office-to-be. The room didn't look too different from the last time I’d been in it. Apart from the piece of plywood Jim had nailed over the broken floor area, he hadn't done much else there. The wardrobe was still lying on the floor. The stairway passage was still open.

I walked toward the cavity in the floor and peered in. Darkness stared back at me.

Something reasonable inside was telling me to leave, close the door behind me and go back to my room. But the last time I’d been here, I hadn't had a very in-depth look at this stairway, or the hidden recess in the library—or the basement passage Jim and I had discovered and the contents of that desk.

To decide what to do about this enormous secret at the center of my house, I needed to find out more of what was all the way down there. And I was possessed by the idea that I had to see everything I could along the way down, too.

So much for my misgivings! The sky through the window was still dark, and a clock on the wall read just past 2:30 a.m., but I was finally going to do this.

I hurried back on tiptoe to my temporary sleeping quarters in the Rose Room, trying not to wake Ziggy, my self-appointed guardian in all things. He’s so cute when he’s snoring and moving his legs in a doggy dream, as he was then.

I quietly swapped my flimsy nightgown for a sweatshirt and jeans, and my slippers for sneakers. From the upstairs kitchen down at the far end of the hall, I grabbed a hunk of paper towels and a bottle of water from the fridge. In the workmen’s supply bin in the hallway, I found a mask to protect my nose from all the dust, a scrunched-up baseball cap to keep the cobwebs
